Unseen Strength: My Mom's Battle with Sarcoidosis and Overcoming the Silent Disease

Writer's picture: M. Marie WalkerM. Marie Walker

Sarcoidosis is a hidden disease that can significantly impact daily life while often going unnoticed. Often dubbed "the silent disease," sarcoidosis can easily elude both patients and doctors due to its subtle symptoms. My mom's courageous journey highlights the realities of living with sarcoidosis, and through her story, I aim to raise awareness about this condition, its symptoms, the potential dangers if neglected, and the benefits of early intervention. Her experience showcases the incredible strength many display when facing such challenges.

Understanding Sarcoidosis

Sarcoidosis is an inflammatory disease primarily affecting the lungs but can involve almost any organ. It develops when clusters of immune cells, known as granulomas, form in different tissues, leading to inflammation. The exact cause remains a mystery, and anyone can develop it, regardless of age, gender, or ethnicity. Over 200,000 cases of sarcoidosis are reported annually in the U.S. alone, making awareness vital.

Many refer to sarcoidosis as "the silent disease" due to its often-vague symptoms, which can easily be confused with other health issues. This ambiguity can delay diagnosis, making understanding sarcoidosis imperative.

Common Symptoms of Sarcoidosis

Symptoms of sarcoidosis can differ greatly among individuals, depending on which organs are affected. Some commonly reported symptoms include:

  • Unexplained fatigue

  • Persistent cough

  • Shortness of breath

  • Chest pain

  • Skin lesions or rashes

  • Swollen lymph nodes

  • Fever

  • Night sweats

A surprising statistic reveals that many people mistakenly identify these symptoms as ordinary fatigue or the common flu, leading to significant delays in diagnosis and treatment.

How Sarcoidosis Affects the Body

Sarcoidosis can cause substantial damage due to its potential to affect various organs. While the lungs are often the first target, the disease can also impact:

  • Skin: It may lead to painful lumps or distinctive rashes in about 20% of patients.

  • Eyes: Inflammation could result in glaucoma or cataracts if untreated, impacting around 25% of individuals.

  • Heart: It threatens heart health, potentially causing arrhythmias in up to 5% of those affected.

  • Nervous System: Neurological complications can arise, varying from headaches to more severe issues like seizures.

Potential Damage If Left Untreated

Ignoring symptoms can lead to severe damage from sarcoidosis. For example, untreated lung issues can result in pulmonary fibrosis, substantially reducing lung function. According to studies, untreated heart involvement might lead to sudden cardiac events in some patients. Neurological complications could cause chronic pain or even paralysis, significantly impacting quality of life.

My mom's experience underscored the critical need for early detection. Her story serves as a cautionary tale of the potential consequences of ignoring symptoms.

My Mom's Journey: An Inspiration

Initially, my mom's symptoms seemed minor. She experienced little to no symptoms-- apart from a little vision trouble. She chalked it up to needing glasses. She ended up going to an eye doctor to get her vision checked and to, ultimately, purchase glasses but got the shock of her life. The doctor told her that she had sarcoidosis... from a simple eye exam! My mom didn't say it, but I know she was scared because before that, we had never even heard of the disease. Immediately after the findings, she set up an appointment with her doctor, who confirmed that she did, indeed, have sarcoidosis. Even though this news was shocking and frightening, it motivated her to take the next step in her health journey.

From there, she was given steroid eye drops and medication to help with inflammation in her body. Eventually my mom began to get lesions on her legs, and she also lost a lot of weight, but we were determined to learn all we could about this silent disease. I began researching on Google, reading books, even asking my own PCP questions about sarcoidosis. My mom began this journey fighting and she's been fighting ever since. From being hospitalized to being administered a heart medication (Tikosyn) that sent her into cardiac arrest, it's been an emotional uphill battle, but she has overcome all that life has thrown at her-- a testament of the resilience, strength, and faith that she has.

Early Warning Signs to Look For

Through her journey, my mom learned the importance of recognizing early warning signs. Addressing these signals can lead to timely intervention, greatly improving health outcomes. Watch for these early indicators:

  • Continuous or worsening cough

  • Unexplained weight loss

  • Decreased energy

  • Shortness of breath during daily activities

  • Changes or lesions on the skin

Being mindful of these signs can empower individuals to seek medical help sooner rather than later.

Seeking Help and Support

After her diagnosis, my mom navigated a complex healthcare landscape filled with specialists, treatments, and frequent check-ups. Seeking professional help was crucial in taking back control of her health.

If you or someone you know is experiencing related symptoms, consider these practical steps:

  1. Consult a Doctor: Reach out to a healthcare provider to discuss symptoms and get necessary tests.

  2. Educate Yourself: Research reliable information about sarcoidosis from reputable sources to understand your condition better.

  3. Build a Support Network: Engage with others who understand your situation. This can provide emotional bolster and helpful resources.

  4. Focus on Mental Health: Chronic illness can take a toll on mental well-being. Talking to a therapist can help you navigate these challenges.

Implementing lifestyle changes—like consuming a balanced diet, exercising regularly, and managing stress—can boost overall well-being.

The Path to Recovery

My mom's determination to manage her health is truly inspiring. By adopting healthy habits, maintaining open lines of communication with her healthcare team, and an increased positive mindset, she has shown remarkable resilience. Each experience has contributed to a growing understanding of this silent disease. Throughout this journey, we recognized the value of support. Knowing others have faced similar challenges provides hope and encouragement.
